Northwestern Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda is a premier 160 \(km^{2}\) conservation area, established in 1925 to protect endangered mountain gorillas within five of the eight Virunga Mountains (Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo). Located ~2.5 hours from Kigali, it is world-renowned for gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, hiking, and Dian Fossey’s historic research base.
